Agios Georgios Church

General description

The Church of St. George of Kavala, in the homonymous area in the center of the city, was founded and established by refugees after 1922, mainly by Thracians and more specifically by Sterna of Eastern Thrace, who settled in the area of Agios Georgios. There was a mosque there, in which a committee placed a cross taking the decision to establish it as a Church in the name of St. George and to place icons and relics brought from the unforgettable homelands.

In 1983 the church and the chapel of Agia Marina were demolished (its icon was transferred to the left aisle of the current church) and in 1985 the new building is ready, which is equipped with all the necessary for its operation furniture and sacred utensils. In 2004, the hagiography on a wall begins. The church is a three-aisled Basilica with a dome.
