The history of this church, which dominates imposingly on the top of a rock high above Kavala, begins in 1928, when on the initiative of some Christians a small wooden chapel was built in honor of Prophet Elias.
Poor and austere, it received the reverent pilgrimage of the excursionists, who found the opportunity to climb up there to enjoy the beauty of the bay of Kavala and, in its depth, Thassos, as well as the picturesqueness of the city.
Along with the appearance of the chapel, the first inhabitants appear, who will create the first core of the settlement of Prophet Elias.
