Church of Agios Pavlos

General description

The Cathedral Church of St. Paul the Apostle was founded to honor and exalt the fact that in this city then Neapolis, then Christoupolis and today Kavala the Apostle of the Nations Paul arrived for the first time in Greece, as well as in The European area in general.  The construction of the Church began with a group of pious Christians in the early 1900s and finally, the foundation stone was laid in 1905 by the Metropolitan bishop of Xanthi Ioakim Sgouros, after the Greek Community had asked for the consent of the Turkish Administration, since the city was still under Turkish occupation.
