
The current official legal form and establishment of the Historical & Literary Archive took place in 1996, when it was now obvious that its size was so important that it had to be organized with modern methods and based on standard scientific institutions, in order to present the valuable historical material it had collected in the previous 50 years.
It is a non-profit charitable foundation, with the modern flexible form of the Civil Society. It does not belong to the public-subsidized institutions, nor is it subsidized by a private body. Its operation is covered financially only by its founders and by the helpers of the local government. It has been operating in its current legal form since 1996.
The aims of the Historical & Literary Archive of Kavala are briefly:
The presentation of its rich historical Archive by specialized scholars, which is done with book editions, CD-ROMs, use of multimedia and the Internet, but also with the organization of exhibitions and conferences. The persistent goal is that all the above presentations should also take place in at least one of the main languages of the European Union, so that foreigners have the opportunity to get to know us better.
The availability of its rich and specialized historical library to scholars. The study and presentation of his rich photographic Archive with editions of books, albums, CDs, DVDs, with the use of multimedia and the Internet, as well as with exhibitions of the collected material. The interconnection with the existing similar Archives of our country and abroad, in order to develop cooperation, research, exchange of know-how and programs, through the organization of conferences, seminars, lectures, exhibitions, etc. An important goal is also the presentation in our country of foreign Archives and the presentation of ours in foreign countries, in order to get to know the cultural and historical elements of each people for a better understanding and cooperation in all fields.
The continuous enrichment and organization of the archival material that he collected and continues to collect intensively. The collected archival historical material, apart from the above, includes anything related to the local folklore of Kavala.
The library of I.L.A.K. today contains more than 30,000 volumes of books, magazines, diaries and newspapers from the 16th century until today. It is focused on northern Greece and is supported by the library program ABEKT. Due to the rarity of its books, it does not function as a lending library. On the spot one can study the volumes you want and get a small number of photocopies for free.
