Kapnergati Square

General description

Kapergate Square, located on Kassandrou and Averoff, is the second important and central square of the city after Freedom Square. In Kapergate Square is the large building of the Municipal Tobacco Warehouse, as well as the monument of Smoker, to which the square owes its name. 

The monument of Smoker, is the creation of Demetriou Armakola, one of the most important modern Greek sculptors. The monument was placed in the homonymous square in 1986. It depicts persons who participated in the tobacco movement, two men and a woman, wanting to show female participation in the struggle. The hands are a separate sculpture that shows the strength, speed and mastery of the hands of the smoker, symbolizes the salary but also the stay at work.

Accessibility description

Wheelchair access is possible (i.e. there are no stairs, narrow openings below 90cm wide, etc.).

The sidewalks are free of obstacles and steps (stairs, etc.).

The surface material is made of concrete slabs.

The ramps are free of items blocking wheelchair access, such as bars or columns.

There is no tactile guide for the blind.

On the sidewalk, at the end to the road surface, there are flower beds.columns/bars.

There are no areas with protruding branches of trees less than 2.20m above the ground.

All trees on the sidewalks have protective grates.

None of the traffic lights have sound signaling.

There are no traffic lights with visual countdown alert.

All signs, traffic lights and/or other elements placed on road poles are safely placed at 2.20m or higher above the ground.

Signs, traffic lights and other kinds of pole-hanging elements are placed as concentrated as possible (e.g. on a common pole).

Around baskets or rubbish bins there is always a free width of 90cm (on the pavement) left for pedestrian crossing.

Caution: Existing public telephones, mailboxes, etc. are not accessible or not at an appropriate height for wheelchair users).

Around the benches that exist, there is always additional space for wheelchair users.

There is street lighting at night, and it is considered sufficient.
